Who We Are
|
Back to Basics Literacy believes in the basic approach to teaching and advocates exposing children to books beginning at birth and reading aloud to children of all ages.
Our founders became aware of the need to focus on literacy as early as possible and to promote it in an enjoyable and positive way through their positions in education. One of our founders has worked with struggling readers in the upper grades where she found it was their lack of comprehension that held them back. Our second founder has experience in two elementary school libraries where it was evident that students’ lack of enthusiasm for reading and books was due in part to time constraints in the classroom not allowing for independent reading and restricting children by adhering to strict reading levels, which dissuades them from enjoying some books and challenging themselves with others. Our third founder has worked at various preschools and day care centers, which demonstrated the need for parental involvement in gaining literacy skills and future reading acquisition. We further support the research that indicates a positive link between being read aloud to and increased literacy skills upon entering school. Being read aloud to sharpens focus, increases vocabulary, improves listening and reading skills and results in greater comprehension. Being read to prior to entering school also exposes children to a larger vocabulary, assists in letter and number recognition and most importantly, teaches children to sit still and focus, which will be expected in kindergarten. We also recognize that there is an art to reading aloud that enhances the experience for the listener and helps them to better comprehend and builds critical and creative thinking skills. We understand that reading is a basic fundamental skill which all future learning depends upon. Back to Basics Literacy is continually looking at new and innovative approaches to learning but feel that the simplest and basic methods remain the best. |
